TV Reporter’s Baby Tests Positive for Cocaine

A former television news reporter and her husband have been charged with three felony counts after their 4-month old infant daughter tested positive for cocaine.  Krystin Lisaius admitted to snorting cocaine with her husband Somchai P. Lisaius at a party back in May of this year.  The cocaine was then passed down to the infant through breastmilk used to nurse the infant child.

The Facts of the Case
The mother of the child believed that she was not endangering the child because she had waited 12 hours before nursing the child, thinking that the cocaine would have no longer been in her system.  The couple admitted their child into the hospital after she displayed signs of distress and appeared listless.  The couple was reluctant to have the child blood tested at the hospital.  The child was then transferred to another Diamond Children’s Center at the Banner University Medical Center where her urine was tested and resulted positive for cocaine.   The couple was formally charged back on June 9th and have pleaded not guilty possession of a felony substance, drug paraphernalia and child abuse.  They have both since been released on their own recognizance.

In the meantime the baby has been sent to live under the watchful eye of her maternal grandmother with limited access to her father, whereas the mother has 24 hour visitation rights.  The couple’s attorney had the following statement to the media regarding the incident:“It would be a gross, gross injustice [with] even the mention of prison time,” said the couple’s lawyer, Michael Piccarreta, to Tucson News Now. “I anticipate they will demonstrate that they have learned a very hard, embarrassing lesson and that this will become a footnote in their life, not a chapter.” Gross Criminal Negligence The gross negligence displayed in the above case is truly mystifying.

It is one thing to gamble with your own health, but when you play with the life of your helpless infant baby you deserve to be punished.  What makes this case truly appalling is that these people aren’t the only ones endangering their child from exposure to drugs.  This type of behavior is happening around the country and the derelict parenting needs to be addressed and stopped.  It would appear that this couple still hasn’t given up their penchant for the night life and when you have a baby you have no choice.  You have acknowledged your unwavering responsibility to ensure the welfare of that child no matter what. If you know of someone who is willfully putting their child at risk or in harm’s way be sure to report them to authorities as soon as humanly possible.  This child is frankly speaking lucky to be alive with this kind of irresponsible and reckless action.  If you suspect anything fishy or shady at all do not hesitate to act on your suspicions.  Every moment counts in these kinds of situations and you have the power to make a difference.  Don’t wait till it’s too late – one person can make an enormous difference in these situations and even save lives.
